Why Being Human is a Business Superpower

The Lessons are in the Mess

I can often be heard saying, "Every day is a school day!" and it is true. But the best lessons don’t usually come from a course or a viral social media hack (although I do love them!) . They’re usually found in the days when things feel a bit chaotic.  The days when not everything goes according to plan.

I wonder if we all spend too much time trying to be "perfectly efficient," especially now that we have AI to polish everything for us. But there is so much value in the bits that aren't polished.

Learning from the wins (and the wobbles)

Usually, we only look for "lessons" when something goes wrong. That is typical of me.  I am a classic overthinker! But I realise that when a day goes really well, that’s a lesson too. It’s a chance to see what our natural strengths look like when they are in full flow.

And the failures? Or the things we call "flaws"? Most of the time, they’re just us being human. Being a bit too detail-oriented might feel like a flaw when you’re in a rush, but it’s a total superpower when you’re catching a mistake that could have cost a client a fortune. Equally, not letting the perfect get in the way of the good in order to get something done can be just as powerful.

Why the "Human Touch" still wins

As a Freelance PA, I’m surrounded by digital tools and clever tech. And while I am in awe of what they can do, they do, in my opinion, have a ceiling.

An algorithm can manage a spreadsheet, but it can’t tell when a client’s email sounds "stressed" instead of just "busy." It doesn't know how to offer a bit of grace when a meeting has to be moved because life just happened. It’s our ability to be tolerant of each other’s errors and quirks that makes a partnership actually work.

The School of Real Life

If we’re always learning, then maybe the most important thing to study is how to be okay with the mess. Acceptance isn't about being lazy; it's about being real. It’s about knowing that we, and the people we support, are going to have "off" days, and that’s exactly where the empathy grows.

So, what I am saying is that I am all for the school of the imperfect. I embrace the mistakes that taught us more than a manual ever could, and I am loyal to the human connections that remind us why, in a virtual world, we still need a real person who "gets it."

P.S. If your 'school day' has been particularly chaotic lately and you need an extra pair of hands to help navigate the mess, I’d love to see how I can support you. Click below to view more about me, the services I offer and how you can get in touch
